React Right is SSI’s emergency response / first-aid specialty (sometimes referred to as EFR = Emergency First Response).
It is designed to teach divers (and non-divers) how to respond in medical emergencies: first aid, CPR, oxygen administration, and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) if available.
Here are the main components of the React Right program:
Component | Topics / Skills |
---|---|
Primary Assessment | How to assess a person in distress: check responsiveness, breathing, pulse, etc. |
First Aid Techniques | Handling bleeding, wounds, fractures, shock, etc. Generally “secondary care”. |
CPR (Adult / Child / Infant) | Cardiopulmonary resuscitation for different ages; chest compressions, rescue breaths, etc. |
AED Basics | How and when to use an AED, safety, etc. |
Oxygen Administration | When to administer oxygen, how to use oxygen equipment in emergencies (especially diving-related) |
Minimum Age: Usually 12-15 years, depending on location.
Prerequisites: None for diving certification — you do not need to already be a certified diver.
Duration: Total around 8-12 hours. Components can be taken individually or in combination (e.g. First Aid & CPR, AED, Oxygen).
Materials & Equipment: Academic/digital learning + practical sessions. Use of training aids (manikins, AED trainers, oxygen delivery systems, etc.).
Certification Validity / Renewal: The React Right certification is valid for 2 years. After that, a React Right Update is required to renew.
Covers life-saving skills useful in many settings (dive trips, travel, at home).
Required (or very strongly recommended) for higher SSI certifications, e.g. Diver Stress & Rescue or any professional level.
Adds confidence: knowing how to respond properly in emergency situations, especially underwater or in remote locations.
